Unite NY in the News: Commentary: Open the primaries to independent voters

Unite NY board member Barbara Collura wrote about open primaries in Times Union.

And here is the part many New Yorkers don't realize: Voters who are not affiliated with any political party make up the second-largest group of registered voters in New York state. Yet these millions of voters are shut out of our taxpayer-funded partisan primaries.
That matters because in many parts of New York, the real election isn't in November. It's the Democratic or Republican primary. Win that, and the general election can be little more than a formality. So millions of New Yorkers are prohibited from voting in the election that, for all practical purposes, decides who will represent them.
