Unite NY Calls for Onondaga County Voters to Decide Term Limits at the Ballot Box
SYRACUSE, NY — Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon vetoed a proposal that would have allowed voters to decide in November whether to establish term limits for the county executive. Unite NY is urging county leaders to move quickly on a revised proposal that gives voters the final say this November.
“At its core, this debate is not about any one elected official or office — it is about whether voters should have the opportunity to decide how their county government is structured,” said Anthony Thomas, executive director of Unite NY. “Onondaga County voters deserve the chance to weigh in on term limits at the ballot box.”
McMahon has indicated that he would support a proposal that applies term limits to both the county executive and the county comptroller. If that is the concern, county legislators should move quickly, work across party lines, and advance a straightforward proposal that allows voters to decide the question for themselves this November.
Term limits are a simple, bipartisan way to hold elected officials accountable and ensure government remains open to fresh voices and new ideas.
