A BROKEN SYSTEM

For far too long, New York’s political system has been a clear example of all that’s wrong with politics. Too few voters think their voice matters, so party bosses, special interests, dirty money, and lobbyists call the shots.

This system stifles competition, whether through unfair ballot access standards, limitless terms in office, restrictions on what issues require public referendums, a closed primary process or through a winner-take-all approach to elections that empowers fringe elements. The result of this broken system is generations of corruption and shameful behavior by a litany of bad actors — from back bench legislators and staffers to every constitutional officer in recent history.

TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE

We need transformational change in New York State; a more dynamic, participatory, and representative democracy where citizens feel empowered and engaged in the electoral process.

The Unite NY team has identified fundamental changes that will significantly increase our chances of reaching that goal: the five pillars of Unite NY’s reform agenda.

THE FIVE PILLARS OF UNITE NY’S REFORM AGENDA

  1. Term Limits - Fresh faces bring fresh ideas. Let’s stop enabling career politicians and start encouraging more citizen participation. Learn more.
  2. Ranked Choice - Ranked Choice Voting ensures the most popular candidate wins and that candidates seek the broadest support. Learn more.
  3. Citizen Ballot Initiative - All citizens should have the right to petition to have the issues they care about most on the ballot. Learn more.
  4. More Candidates - It's very hard to get on the ballot in New York. Let's make it easier for candidates so voters have more choices. Learn more.
  5. Open Primaries - Open partisan primaries would allow every voter the ability to participate in candidates selection. Learn more.
