THE PROBLEM
Structural problems in New York’s election laws have tipped the balance heavily towards special interests and entrenched partisan leaders, resulting in a lack of confidence by citizens that their government can solve the problems impacting their pocketbooks and kitchen tables. That lack of confidence has led to, among other things, low voter turnout, disenfranchisement and talent flight from New York to other states.
THE UNITE NY MISSION
Unite NY is a non-partisan movement seeking to build a stronger democracy in New York through more voices and more choices.
THE UNITE NY VISION
A fairer, stronger, more democratic New York; a dynamic, participatory, and representative system where every New Yorker feels empowered and engaged in the electoral process and where our government is better able to tackle the big issues that worry New Yorkers — instead of wasting time battling each other.
PRINCIPLES OF ACTION
- Our government has a strong democratic foundation that is worth fighting for.
- Our government should be more responsive to citizens.
- Citizens can be empowered to pursue the change New York needs.
SOLUTION
We want to help citizens understand that their voices, through representative government, are how the policies affecting their lives economically (and otherwise) can be changed.
We seek to engage citizens in helping them to motivate key decision makers to implement simple, practical solutions to restore the balance of power and deepen citizen engagement.
We do this work understanding that what happens in New York influences what happens in the rest of the country, and vice versa; as such, a symbiotic relationship between state and national efforts advances our mutual goals.
New Yorkers are creative, innovative and care deeply about their families and friends. More than in most states, there remains pride in our state, if we can keep it. With the right amount of individual fortitude and community support, New Yorkers can make change happen.
