In a Rome Sentinel letter to the editor, our board member John Bullis explains why term limits, along with ranked-choice voting, citizen ballot initiatives, and open primaries give New York residents more choice and make government more accountable to the people it serves.
Bullis writes, "Term limits is a top priority for Unite NY, along with ranked-choice voting, citizen ballot initiatives, open primaries and better ballot access. These reforms give New York residents more choice, accountability, and make government work better for the people they serve.
Too often our current processes preserve closed door policies prioritized to benefit those in power rather than serve the public.
This time the electorate in both counties made critical choices that looked similar but had very different intents. And both counties got it right!
Onondaga voters saw an opportunity to adopt a measure that sustains good government requiring the periodic turnover of elected officials, insuring fresh ideas and broader public participation. They embraced it! Voters in Herkimer County saw a move to double the length of each legislative term with no end in sight. And they rejected it."
